Prehistory & Antiquity
Human presence in Morocco stretches back hundreds of thousands of years; by classical times, Phoenician trading posts and Roman Volubilis tied the region to Mediterranean networks.
Idrisid Morocco & the Founding of Fez (8th–9th c.)
After Islam reached the Maghreb, the Idrisid dynasty formed Morocco’s first Islamic state. Idris I founded a settlement (789) and Idris II established Fez as the capital (808–809), shaping a scholarly city that later hosted al-Qarawiyyin.
Almoravids & Almohads (11th–13th c.)
The Almoravids founded Marrakesh (commonly dated c.1070), then the Almohads built monumental walls, gates and mosques across the realm.
Marinids, Wattasids & Saadians (13th–17th c.)
Competing dynasties shaped imperial cities; the Marinids built necropolises and madrasas in Fez, while Saadians enriched Marrakesh with palaces and tombs—material heritage you still visit today. UNESCO World Heritage Centre
‘Alawi Dynasty & Meknes (17th–18th c.)
The reigning ‘Alawi line unified most of today’s Morocco. Sultan Moulay Ismaïl made Meknes his capital (1672–1727), creating vast walls, gates and palaces—now a UNESCO site.
Protectorates & Tangier International Zone (1912–1956)
In 1912 France and Spain established protectorates; Tangier became an international zone (1925–1956). Morocco regained independence in 1956 and reintegrated Tangier that year.
Modern Morocco
A constitutional monarchy under the ‘Alawis, Morocco recognized Amazigh (Tamazight) as an official language in 2011 (Article 5), reflecting the country’s plural identity.
